Three anti-malarial drugs are prescribed for lupus symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil is the most commonly prescribed because it is generally believed to cause fewer side effects; chloroquine Aralen has a reputation for more serious side effects, but it may be prescribed in situations where hydroxychloroquine cannot be used. I am starting to itch in my scalp, back, stomach, face and arms now. I think this rash is just starting, so I don't know if it will develope into hives or what. Could this be related to the plaquenil. I have had some weird hive like rashes in the past that I was not able to get biopsied for lupus, so I don't know if this could be the case or not. Dosage for Plaquenil. The adult dose of Plaquenil to suppress malaria is 400 mg on the same day each week. The pediatric weekly suppressive dosage is 5 mg/kg of body weight. The adult dose of Plaquenil to treat an acute attack of malaria is an initial dose of 800 mg followed by 400 mg in six to eight hours and 400 mg for two more days.
