The doctors of Wellish Vision Institute are experienced in testing patients for early signs of Plaquenil side effects. Thorough tests include visual acuity examinations, distortion and color vision tests, central field of vision tests, and a detailed dilated retinal exam. If you're taking this medicine for a long period of time, your doctor will probably recommend annual eye exams. Pregnancy and Plaquenil. It's not known whether Plaquenil will harm an unborn baby. Both my rheumatologist and opthamologist recommended exams every 6mo for the first year I was on plaquenil. Now I just go yearly to have my eyes checked. Also, my rhuemy said any time he makes an adjustment to my plaquenil that I'll need an eye exam within 6mo just to make sure nothing has changed. Good luck!

Similar to its use in systemic lupus erythematosus, many clinicians feel that it is useful in reducing general Sjögren’s “disease activity.” One of the reasons that physicians feel comfortable in prescribing Plaquenil is its low risk to benefit ratio. In Sjögren’s, Plaquenil is used to treat many symptoms of Sjögren’s including fatigue, joint symptoms of arthritis and arthralgias (joint pain), dry mouth and dry eyes.

Aug 01, 2009 i have only been taking plaquenil for 18 mths and recently found out that i have macula degeneration, my last eye exam was only 6 mths ago and there was no sign of anything then. i strongly advise 6 monthly eye exams and if there is the slightest blurring of vision get it checked out. Plaquenil eye problems can be rare but serious. One of the most concerning Plaquenil side effects is retinal damage. The prolonged use of Plaquenil can cause harm to the delicate tissues of the retina, causing loss of vision. Patients who suffer from retinal damage due to Plaquenil use are not able to detect their condition at first. Plaquenil is a pretty widely used drug so I figure she should have an opinion on it. I would feel more comfortable having the baseline exam done first BUT I am pretty eager to get started on it ASAP as my eye is starting to bug me due to the morphea that is slowly spreading.
