    Feb 19, 2020 Hydroxychloroquine sulfate is a colorless crystalline solid, soluble in water to at least 20 percent; chemically the drug is 2-4-7-Chloro-4-quinolylaminopentylethylamino ethanol sulfate 11. Doses expressed as chloroquine base. Each tablet contains 155 mg of chloroquine base equivalent to 250 mg of chloroquine phosphate. Syrup contains 50 mg/5 mL of chloroquine base equivalent to 80 mg/5 mL of chloroquine phosphate. Chloroquine is used to prevent or treat malaria caused by mosquito bites in countries where malaria is common. Malaria parasites can enter the body through these mosquito bites, and then live in body tissues such as red blood cells or the liver.

    Plaquenil is also an antirheumatic medicine and is used to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and discoid or systemic lupus erythematosus. This medicine is not effective against all strains of malaria.
